A MASSIVE Durham University basketball team gave Edinburgh University a real doing in their opening fixture of the Northern Premier Division League at the Pleasance.
The final score of 105-40 to Durham in no way flattered the visitors who in addition to seven Americans had a very good Australian in Ashley Vella, a Czech ,Tanya Licida, and only one English player, Elly Byrne.
But visiting coach Lee Davie, who also coaches Durham Wildcats in the BBL, insisted that the young Edinburgh side, including Hilary Wood, Beth Mackie and Hannah Peacock, should not be downhearted and would win games in the division.
Top scorer for the visitors was the 6ft 3in Sandra Rogers with 31 points, while Wood had 10 and Peacock eight for Edinburgh.
Home coach Cameron Tucker was not too dismayed: “Our players now know what competition in the Premier League looks like. The goal is improvement and I’m confident they’ll grow together and we’ll see dramatic gains throughout the season.
“I love this team because they showed up for practice afterwards eager to get better.”
