Great BRITAIN were on their way home today from the Eurobasket Women’s Championships in France despite an outstanding individual performance by French club star Jo Leedham in their final game in the second round last night, a fighting 85-79 victory over Croatia.
Leedham scored 26 points, gave ten assists and took nine rebounds, very nearly achieving a rare “triple double”. Edinburgh’s Rose Anderson, though only playing for seven minutes, had her best tally of the event, scoring seven points, including a three-pointer, and adding an assist and a steal.
But because Serbia had earlier beaten a Czech Republic team, 75-59, who had already made the quarter-finals (and had the head-to-head advantage over GB), the gallant British effort was in vain and they went out in the second round with exactly the same record as the Czechs – two wins and two defeats.
France look favourites to capture the title when the tournament resumes tomorrow.
