Bainfield’s prospects of being in the shake-up for top spot in the East B section of the gents seniors indoor bowls national league took a hard knock in dramatic circumstances against leaders East Lothian.
EL’s last-gasp 54-52 victory at the Hutchison Crossway Stadium made it seven wins out of eight for them and pushed them five points clear of now third-placed Bainfield.
The rinks skipped by Mike Marshall and Adam Brock had kept Bainfield in the picture but EL managed to do more damage against Stewart Wilson and Bill Little.
Entering the final ends, Willie Wood carded a vital single and Alistair Russell conjured up a magic three to boost EL. Wood did finish 14-13 down to Bill McIntosh, Irvine Kemp, Walter Borthwick and Marshall while Les Nicholson, Dick Wilson, Mike Sutherland and Brock finished 2, 1, 1, 2 to pip Tom Young 11-10.
Wilson finished with a three but went down 13-11 to Lessel Middler, George Gray, Brian Bisset and Peter Laidlaw while Little was edged out 18-16 by Kenny Morgan, Jim McLeod, Ronnie Douglas and Russell.
Balbardie, in second place, beat Teviotdale 73-56 while Midlothian beat West Lothian 73-53.
