Colin Hairs of Hillside is the 2013 Singles champion of The Edinburgh Bowling League after the 38-year-old secured a commanding 21-7 victory at his home rink over George Kirk in the finals of the ABT Machine Tools-sponsored Knockout Championships.
Kirk came into the final as a firm favourite to capture the title for Blackhall with the CV of the stalwart of Edinburgh & Leith’s recent Hamilton Trophy triumph including five previous title wins in the EBL Knockouts.
But Hairs proved to be undaunted by the form of his illustrious opponent and produced a brilliantly steady performance to overwhelm 29-year-old Kirk in 17 ends.
“I have operated below the radar since those heady days of 2000 but you do hanker for a return to the headline banners and this final against George offered me that opportunity and I was focused on grabbing it,” said Hairs.
Hairs blew Kirk away in the early stages of the final, making a whirlwind start of 1, 2, 2, 3 to stand 8-0 up then storming into a 13-2 lead after nine ends.
Hairs already had Kirk at his mercy at 14-6 when adding to his opponent’s misery with a run of 3, 1, 2 that accelerated him to 20 and, two ends later, he triggered the triumphant title winning salute with a single to 21.
