Co-operative Funeralcare will sponsor The Scottish Inter County Top Ten for the fourth year running – an event in in which one of Edinburgh’s most historic bowling clubs will make its debut.

The 2015 championship heralds the bow of West End BC as the 2014 champions of Edinburgh – a first-time success achieved in the club’s 150th anniversary year.

West End clinched the title with a 6-2 final win over Queensberry at Mayfield.

West End secretary Graham Hockaday said: “We are prepared for our first venture in the national top ten being an extremely daunting one but we relish the challenge and look forward to our away visit to Borders champions Jedburgh in the first round.”

The winning players who will go down in history for West End are: Donnie Gilbertson (Singles); Ray Dorans and Moray Tait (Pairs); Keith Gellaitry, Grant Pagan, Peter Gibb (Triples); Callum Gilbertson, Graham Hockaday, Murray Baillie, Mark Church (Fours).

The announcement of the Co-operative’s continuing investment was made at the National Annual General meeting at which Gary Clelland from the Bellsburn BC in Linlithgow was elected as president.

He said: “It’s a major challenge in these times of austerity to attract generous funding for amateur sport so it is a morale boost for us that our 2015 brochure has achieved its full target of support advertisers on top of the input from The Co-operative Funeralcare.”

Lorinda Robertson, head of marketing at the Co-operative, said: “Supporting local communities is at the heart of everything we do and this high-profile national championship of 34 years standing fits our criteria well as it embraces all 25 County Associations and its vast grass-root membership.”
