East Lothian ladies champion Dee Hoggan and her West Lothian counterpart Jenifer Richardson both put up strong shows in the playdown action of the Scottish Singles Championship at Coatbridge but lost in their respective quarter-finals.
Hoggan began with a 21-14 victory over Balbardie (Bathgate) champion Sharon Leitch and followed up with a 15-4 defeat of Audrey Stewart of Forfar.
It looked like curtains when she went 17-9 down to Lorna Cameron of Whiteinch, but she produced a magnificent response to conjure up a 21-20 victory.
A quarter-final clash against six-time national champion Julie Forrest of Teviotdale was the toughest test imaginable but Hoggan made a confident start to hold her own at 8-8 before going down 21-11 in 20-ends.
Meanwhile, Richardson opened with a 21-10 victory over Gail Notman of East Kilbride in the prelim round, then defeated Lauren McGowan of Fintry in the first round, blazing a 17-5 trail before being tested at 19-15 and answering with a double to 21 on the 22nd end.
Marie Todd of Tweedbank faced Richardson in the second round and succumbed 21-13.
Richardson faced 2007 champion Claire Johnston of Auchinleck in the quarter-final and carded 11 shots in a 25-end defeat.
Stacey Laidlaw represented the Midlothian banner but made an early exit, losing a thrilling 21-19 battle with international colleague Claire Johnston.
Bainfield champion Mandy O’Donnell defeated Seona Black of Falkirk before losing in 20 ends to Lesley Doig of East Fife in the second round.
The four semi-final qualifiers are, Doig, Johnston, Forrest and Leanne Furye of Arbroath.
