IAN PATERSON SNR was crowned champion of Willowbrae BC for a fifth time with the 71-year old’s ninth final appearance resulting in a 21-16 victory in 25 ends against his 68-year old challenger Gordon Taylor.

Paterson – a Scottish Junior Cup Final hero with Bonnyrigg Rose in 1966 as he scored a double in a 6-1 triumph over Whitburn in a replay at Hampden Park – was clawed back from 18-9 to 19-16 by Taylor before a single to 19 gave him the chance to go long on end 25 and his reward was the winning single to 21.

Paterson is yet to win the ‘The Champion of Champions’ Tait Trophy but came close in 1981 when losing to David McGill in the final. However, he took great pride in seeing son Ian Jnr beat Robert Marshall in the 2001 final.
