Injuries to key figures see East Lothian crash out

The cards didn’t fall in favour of an East Lothian team that crashed out of the Hamilton Trophy 130-100 to defending champions Lanarkshire South in their quarter-final clash at Kilmarnock venue, Hurlford.

What was always going to be a difficult enough task for a team missing regular stars Scott Kennedy, Steven Morgan and Grant Thomson, became monumental when back related injuries caused the late withdrawal of ace skips Alex Marshall and Alister Kennedy.

Kern Gallagher was also a late absentee and the consequent reshuffle included call-ups for Alan Young, Billy Dunleavey and Alan Clydesdale.

“We gave a good account of ourselves in the early stages of the match but missed the fire-power of our absent big gun figures and were unable to live with a strong opposition that deserved their win,” said EL captain Brian Young.

Wins on the rinks skipped by Craig Valentine and Derek Oliver were the best EL had to offer with John McCrorie, Willie Wood, Billy Mellors and Young all losing. Valentine picked up from 11-13 to skip Stuart Johnston, Gordon Baillie and Ronnie Branley to a 19-16 win over Jim Meikle while Chris Johnston, Jamie Gordon, Colin Glen and Oliver finished on a double to beat Scot Forrest, 21-19.

The other scores were, Brian Young 16, Ian Campbell 21; Billy Mellors 17, Robert Grant 26; Willie Wood 13, David Gardner 22; John McCrorie 15, John Simpson 26.

Ayrshire North beat Angus and now play Lanarkshire.
