Parkside are four-and-a-half points clear at the top of Division 1 of the Alpha Trophies-sponsored Edinburgh Bowling League after keeping chief rivals and defending champions Craigentinny at bay with a 5-4 home victory.

A tight encounter saw Craigentinny win on one rink and in last-end drama finishing peels on two. Parkside’s only win was delivered in emphatic bonus-point value style by Paul Veitch, who skipped Graeme Fraser, Ewan Diven and Brian Salvona to a 17-4 success over stand-in skip Daniel Gormley.

Craigentinny saw Kevin McFarlane skip Kevin Hunter, Malky Milne and Gary Nisbet to a 16-12 win over Derek Smith.

Robert Donaldson benefited from a 6 followed by a 4 to skip Alex Hurry, Dave Sherriffs and Danny Jackson into a 16-10 lead but the home rink slipped to a 17-17 peel with Ian Duncan, Stuart Betts, David Brown and Andy Caldwell.

Neil Watson and his rink of Craig Bryce, Davie Moran and Andy Hargan led 12-10 going into the last but finished 12-12 with Craig McCall, Lewis Betts, Gordon Bold and Andy Jeffrey.

Queensberry hold onto third place but would have held stronger title claims had they managed better than a 5-4 home win over fifth-placed Maitland.

The major drama centred on the home rink of Colin McKenzie, Mick Imrie Snr, Alan Watson and Scott Walker, who blew a 18-4 lead as rival skip Brian Higgins and his front-three of Andi Kellagher, Peter Morris and Alan Flockhart whipped up a whirlwind finish of 3, 1, 7, 3, 1 to steal a 19-18 win for Maitland.

Queensberry v Maitland – other scores: Frank O’Reilly 13, Alan Trotter 16; Brian Pollard 22, Jim Robertson 18; John Kidd 28, Graeme McIntosh 7.

Northern’s 7-2 win at Summerside and Hillside’s 7-2 win at Leith moves both well clear of the relegation zone.

Gordon Wilson Jnr included a full-house count of 8 as he skipped his Northern rink of Garry Harrison, Gordon Wilson Snr and Davie Scott to a 26-12 away win over Peter Miller of Summerside.

Summerside v Northern – other scores: Mark Fyfe 16, Ian Miller 15; Paul Jeromson 8, Jamie Reid 18; David Poole 8, Jim Bathgate 16.
