Stewart Anderson skips his rink to first Pro-Am Triples title

The inaugural Pro-Am Triples tournament staged by East Lothian IBC at their Alex Marshall Arena and co-sponsored by Johnston Fuels and Medical & Professional saw Lewis Betts, Billy Mellors and Stewart Anderson crowned as champions.

There was a starting field of 24 for the initial round-robin stage of six sections producing winners from the trios skipped by John McCrorie, Billy Allan, Graham Robertson, Derek Oliver, Darren Burnett, Stewart Anderson, Robert Grant and Colin Walker.

Betts, Mellors and Anderson progressed through the knockout stage into the final to face James Hogg, Willie Wood and Graham Robertson. The final was an epic battle went right down to the wire before Anderson skipped his men to victory by two shots.

The reflection of event organiser Billy Mellors was that every youth player that took part rose to the occasion with inspired performance levels while a prominent display from the Para Bowlers saw Michael Simpson, Garry Brown and Billy Allan just edged out in the quarter-finals.

• EAST LOTHIAN ladies pulled off a superb 9-1 victory over Midlothian in the first round of the Scottish Cup at Tweedbank.

Yvonne Veitch emerged the headline star for ‘the garden county’ with a rock-solid performance to skip Melissa Penman (debutant), Muriel Hamilton and Nancy McNeil to a superlative 31-11 win over Grace McGregor.

Emma Logan showed her internal class form to skip Margaret Murray, Jean Russell and Megan Kivlin to a 26-14 win over Anne Rutherford while the rink of Pat Turner, Cathy Ward, Mags Thomson and Janet 
Fairnie beat Shona Johnstone, 22-20.

The Midlothian blushes were only slightly spared by the rink skipped by Margaret Porter fighting out a 15-15 share of the points with Rose Campbell, Rosemary Mackintosh, Irene Gray and Gillian 
Mackintosh.

Also in the Cup, Balbardie beat East Fife 6-4 at Abbeyview; Bainfield were crushed 10-0 by Falkirk at Livingston, and West Lothian were humbled 9-1 by Stirling at Falkirk.
