Edinburgh boxer Paul Appleby failed to deliver victory in his debut fight in the lightweight division as he was stopped in the eighth and final round of his bout with Englishman Scott Cardle at Glasgow’s SECC.

The 26-year-old, who now holds a record of six wins and six defeats since March 2009, fought well throughout Saturday night’s clash against the undefeated Cardle, 24, but appeared weary as the clock ticked down in the final round and, after being knocked to the canvas, the fight was stopped by the referee despite Appleby’s pleas to continue.

Appleby was fighting on the undercard as Ricky Burns lost his WBO lightweight title, the Coatbridge fighter outpointed by American Terence Crawford.
