Josh Taylor is out of the World Boxing Championships after losing to the No.5 seed and home favourite, Kazakhstan’s Merey Akshalov.

The 22-year-old Lochend star had travelled to Almaty with every intention of returning to the Capital with at least a medal, but lost out to an opponent who has boxed at the highest level in the 2008 Olympic Games and World Series Boxing championships (WSB). However, the 64kg second-round bout was a close affair with Taylor producing some clean and direct shots on Akshalov and appeared to have been the more clinical during the second and third rounds. But, backed by a large home support in the Kazakhstan city, the judges awarded the fight to Akshalov who advances to the quarter-finals.

Taylor tweeted: “Lost my fight today in a very close contest. Really gutted. Lost to a Beijing Olympian and former WSB champ. Top fighter.”
