Edinburgh boxing talent Lee McGregor is out of the AIBA World Championships after losing his second-round bout to American Duke Ragan on points in Hamburg last night.

The Scottish and British 56kg champion was confident of securing a podium spot in Germany at the very least and will be bitterly disappointed to exit the competition at this stage.

The 20-year-old Meadowbank amateur had made short work of Vanuatu’s Boe Warawara in his first-round bout on Friday evening, looking classy despite being dropped to the canvas by an opponent for the first time in his career.

However, 19-year-old Cinicinatti-native Ragan, who had an impressive victory over Olympic and world youth champion Javier Diaz Ibanez in his first-round duel, impressed all five judges to secure his place in tomorrow afternoon’s quarter-final and send McGregor home.

The Capital fighter, though, is still in pole position to secure his place for April’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, with the Scottish team expected to be announced in November.
