Lewis Benson was celebrating today after being confirmed in Scotland’s boxing squad for this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 22-year-old Lochend fighter has now officially been selected for the covenant 69kg berth and completes the ten-man line up. “This is the proudest day of my life,” Benson said. “I’m going to do whatever it takes to get that gold medal for Scotland.”

Benson’s confirmation was delayed by seven days after the Scottish champion was required to compete in a box-off against Glenrothes’ Connor Law by Boxing Scotland last weekend, a fight he won by a split decision.

Benson had already beaten Law at the end of March at the Emirates Arena in the final of the Scottish Championships, but was ordered to fight for a final time as his opponent had accumulated a greater points tally during the Games qualifying period.

However, it was the Capital boxer who was ultimately given the green light.
