Edinburgh’s Lee McGregor crashed out of the European Youth Boxing Championships last night after a split decision in his opponent’s favour.
The 17-year-old was drawn against Azerbaijan’s world bronze medallist Masud Yusifzada in Zagreb and despite a strong performance by the 52kg fighter, it was Yusifzada whose arm was raised to signal victory at the expense of a tearful McGregor. There was a feeling in some quarters that the Capital boxer, who was warned twice for lowering his head, had done enough to seal his spot in the next round.
The teenager said afterwards: “I never ever cry after a fight and I’m honest when I think I lost. A referee has once again ruined my chance of getting a medal. I boxed out of my skin and there’s nothing else I can do.”
