Edinburgh’s International Silver cruiserweight champion Stephen Simmons maintained his 100 per cent record as a professional with a points win over English opponent Courtney Richards in Leeds on Saturday night.

The 30-year-old was fighting on the same card as fellow Scot Ricky Burns, who made his return to the ring at light welterweight. The former WBO lightweight champion also scored a points victory, over Alexandre Lepelley.

Simmons, who started slowly, gradually found his rhythm, making good use of the left jab in the latter stages of the bout. “I found it a little hard to get up for a six- rounder because I’ve been in bigger fights,” Simmons said.

“But I just need to get more active then I can start moving up.

“I do feel I’d be ready for a big fight like Ovill McKenzie [British and Commonwealth champion] now.”
