Capital cyclist Evan Oliphant turned on the style to post an impressive victory at the Scottish Road Race Championships at Alford in Aberdeenshire.
Riding for Team Raleigh, the 32-year-old, who has started to find his best form over recent weeks, featured in a five-man break that included James McCallum (NFTO) and Alex Coutts, competing in the colours of Edinburgh Road Club.
Oliphant made his effort before the final climb of the 85-mile event and built a substantial lead over McCallum, then powered up the climb and retained his advantage as he came home to a solo success.
McCallum ended as runner-up for the fifth time in his career, while Steven Lawley, a convert from athletics, and now a member of the Edinburgh outfit Rigmar Racers, completed the podium.
Jane Barr (Starley Primal) came home well clear of Julie Erskine (Velosport Past Montegrappa) to take the women’s title, which was contested over 63 miles. The third finisher was Genevieve Whitson, a Kiwi who spends her weekends riding a rickshaw around the streets of Edinburgh, a task she has used to improve her endurance.
