Capital cyclist Evan Oliphant will be back in the saddle and looking to claim some big name scalps when he lines up for the British Time Trial Championships in South Wales.
The main objective for the in-form 32-year-old Team Raleigh rider over the coming days will be Sunday’s British road race championship, which also takes place in Monmouthshire.
However, he also has a highly impressive record of riding against the clock and won the Scottish 25-mile time trial title in 2011. Nevertheless, he faces a tough task tonight against a field that includes Commonwealth champion David Millar (Garmin Sharp) and Olympic gold medallist Sir Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky).
And adding to the size of the challenge is the presence of another rider from the world’s top flight UCI ProTour, Alex Dowsett. He has been named in the Tour de France Movistar squad’s long list for the blue riband race, which starts in two weeks, and is bidding for a fourth successive British time trial title.
Meanwhile, former City of Edinburgh rider Katie Archibald will be among the challengers in the 13-mile women’s event when she seeks to get the better of the defending champion Jo Rowsell.
