Jen Taylor of the
Capital-based Velo Ecosse team chalked up an impressive win in the Scottish Women’s Road Race Championships in
Aberdeenshire yesterday, writes COLIN RENTON.

Taylor outsprinted Julie
Erskine of the host club,
Granite City Racing Team, with Eileen Roe (Breast Cancer Care Cycling Team completing the podium, 16 seconds down.

Louise Borthwick (Edinburgh RC) crossed the line in seventh spot to secure the junior award.

Meanwhile, Gary Hand (Herbalife Leisure Lakes), a runner-up on two previous occasions, landed the men’s title when he edged out his fellow internationals Davie Lines (MG-Maxifuel) and defending champion James McCallum (Rapha Condor-JLT) to take the honours.

Elsewhere, Edinburgh rider Evan Oliphant was back in the saddle today looking to build on an impressive start to the eight-day An Post Ras in Ireland.

Racing in the colours of the Scotland national squad, he featured in a breakaway group of 18 riders on the 135-kilometre opening stage from Dunboyne to Longford. The bunch was gradually reeled in and it was Irishman Conor Dunne who eventually took the honours, coming home four seconds clear of New Zealander Mike Northey, with Oliphant finishing in the main bunch to lie sixth overall, 31 seconds
behind Dunne.
