Former Hibs striker Steven Fletcher is poised to play his first matches for Scotland eight months after being named in Gordon Strachan’s squad for the forthcoming friendlies with the United States and Norway.

The Sunderland hitman hasn’t pulled on a dark blue jersey since suffering a serious ankle injury during the World Cup qualifying match against Wales at Hampden in March, the 26-year-old returning for the Black Cats at earlier this season, only to suffer a shoulder injury after a heavy fall while playing against West Brom.

But there was no place in Strachan’s squad for another ex-Hibs star with Leigh Griffiths overlooked, as was Hearts goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald, as the Scotland coach opted for Partick Thistle’s Scott Fox as back-up to Matt Gilks and David Marshall.

Scotland: Fox (Partick Thistle), Gilks (Blackpool), Marshall (Cardiff), Berra (Ipswich), Greer (Brighton), Hanley (Blackburn), Hutton (Aston Villa), Martin (Norwich), Mulgrew (Celtic), Wallace (Rangers), Whitaker (Norwich), Adam (Stoke), Anya (Watford), Bannan (Crystal Palace), Brown (Celtic), Bryson (Derby), Burke (Birmingham), Forrest (Celtic), Morrison (WBA)< McArthur (Wigan), Snodgrass (Norwich), Fletcher (Sunderland), Naismith (Everton), Phillips (QPR), Rhodes (Blackburn).
