Forth 1 All Stars and Strawberry Hill nursery will contest a fundraising football match this Sunday to help an Edinburgh mum suffering from Multiple Sclerosis.

Mary Callachan from Clermiston has suffered with MS for more than 20 years but her two daughters have launched a £20,000 fundraising campaign to help her travel to America for breakthrough stem cell treatment.

Led by Mary’s daughter Lauren, the team of footballing nursery workers from Strawberry Hill will take on the Forth 1 All Stars at Spartans’ Ainslie Park on Sunday. Kick-off is 3pm and entry is by donation.

Nursery worker Lauren, 22, said: “My mum was diagnosed before I was born so I have never known my relationship with her to be any different. Growing up, I didn’t think she was any different.

“I have seen my mum’s illness worsen over the years to now being totally restricted to her wheelchair. My sister tells me stories of when she was younger, of how my mum loved to cook, she loved her job in the bank and going out. It’s hard to know that I would never see my mum like that.”

Organisers already have £2000 towards the £20,000 target from previous fundraising. All monies raised this weekend will be shared between Mary’s appeal and Forth 1’s Cash for Kids, which helps disadvantaged children across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife.

Forth 1 presenter Mark Martin is hoping for a large crowd on the day: “When we were contacted about the challenge match it was something we couldn’t turn down.

“Mary’s story is tragic and we hope to play our part in supporting the appeal. The fact we’re also raising money for Cash for Kids too means many people will benefit from the game.

“Our game is entry by donation and we’d love to see a big crowd on the day so come along and give what you can for both causes.”

The Forth 1 team will feature award-winning comedian Gareth Waugh, George Street DJ Barrie Wilkins, celebrity hair stylist Boyd MacIntyre, Forth 1’s Mark Martin and other familiar faces on the day.

Families are encouraged to head along to Ainslie Park on the day to take part in a beat the goalie challenge plus a kids vs dads half-time match.
