Hearts captain Danny Wilson played his first match in more than a month as the Jambos’ Under-20s lost 3-1 at home to Hamilton.
Wilson, who has not appeared for the first team since aggravating a hamstring injury against Hibs on October 26, played in the opening 45 minutes at New Victoria Park and came through unscathed.
The 22-year-old was joined by senior players Scott Gallacher, Jordan McGhee, Robbie Buchanan and Gary Oliver in what was a very young reserve side. With that in mind, it was no real surprise that Hamilton were victorious as they moved to the top of the SPFL Development League.
Accies scored in the first minute after Eamonn Brody broke the offside trap and fired beyond keeper Gallacher. Fifteen minutes later they made it 2-0 when Greg Docherty nodded home a Steven Boyd cross.
Hearts did pull a goal back five minutes later when Buchanan scored a penalty after being impeded in the box.
Wilson was withdrawn at the interval – as was full-back Liam Smith, who went to hospital with a foot injury – but Hearts could not equalise. In fact, it was Accies who finished off the scoring, with Ben Reilly making the points safe with an angled shot six minutes from the end.
