Hearts were held to a goalless stalemate at Dumbarton this afternoon as the Jambos dropped their first points of the campaign.

However, Robbie Neilson’s men still sit aloft of the Championship table, although their lead has been cut to just a solitary point after Rangers’ 4-0 victory over Raith Rovers last night.

It so nearly was five consecutive victories however when Sam Nicholson’s header crashed off the bar from a Danny Wilson cross deep into stoppage time.

It proved a frustrating 90 minutes for Hearts who struggled in the opening 45 minutes, the hosts taking the game to the visitors who were looking to utilise the experience of former Hibs striker Colin Nish who led the Sons’ attacking line.

However, neither goalkeeper was really tested with Dumbarton’s Chris Kane the closest to opening the scoring in a drab first-half as his shot flashed just wide of Neil Alexander’s right-hand post.

After the break, the Gorgie side upped the intensity where the home side were camped within their own half for long spells – Nicholson, James Keatings and substitute Jamie Walker all trying their luck from distance.

Then in the final minute, an injured Nicholson asserted all his energy to get his head on Wilson’s cross but the ball rebounded back off the crossbar as Hearts were made to settle for a point.
