Hearts will face English Premier League newcomers Newcastle United in a friendly at Tynecastle on Friday, July 14.

The glamour match will see the Edinburgh club's head coach, Ian Cathro, reunited with his former manager Rafa Benitez. Cathro was part of Benitez's coaching staff at St James' Park before taking up his first managerial role in Gorgie last December.

Hearts defender Aaron Hughes will also be facing his former club having made 248 appearances for Newcastle between 1997 and 2005. The fixture will be Hearts’ only home pre-season friendly and all proceeds will go directly towards stadium redevelopment as they build a new £12million main stand.

Their pre-season begins in Dublin against St Patrick's Athletic on Wednesday, July 5, before they meet Linfield in Belfast on July 8. The match against Newcastle, which kicks off at 7.45pm, will be their final outing before the Betfred Cup group stage begins away to Elgin City on July 18.

Newcastle's last visit to Tynecastle was 22 years ago, when a Peter Beardsley goal earned them a 1-0 friendly win on August 9, 1995.
