DYLAN McGOWAN today described Jamie MacDonald’s save from Scott Robertson at Easter Road last night as the best he has ever seen – and then tipped the goalkeeper for international recognition.
The Australian said he was certain the Hibs midfielder’s swerving shot with the outside of his right foot would land in the Hearts net early in the League Cup quarter-final.
However, MacDonald produced a stunning reaction save to push the ball on to his crossbar, preserving a clean sheet before Ryan Stevenson’s 34th-minute winner took Hearts into the semi-finals.
Based on form so far this season, McGowan feels that MacDonald deserves a Scotland call-up. He admitted being mesmerised by the save from Robertson as Hibs laid siege to the Hearts goal during the early stages of last night’s tie. “Jamie’s been brilliant this year. Outwith Fraser Forster at Celtic, I rank him as one of the best goalkeepers in the league,” said McGowan. “His form this year has been nothing short of outstanding. He was our player of the year last year and he’s kicked on from that now.
“His save last night was probably the best save I’ve ever seen live at any game. I’ve turned round fully expecting to see the ball in the net and he’s pushed it on to the bar. He’s got aspects of his game, like everyone, that he needs to work on. But at the moment, if he isn’t the second-best goalkeeper in Scotland, I don’t know who is.
“If they are picking goalkeepers from the Scottish league for the Scotland team, Jamie has to be in with a shout. That’s no disrespect to the goalkeepers who are already in there but he’s been fantastic this season.”
