Hearts lost 2-0 to Dundee United in their final SPFL Under-20 home fixture of the season.

Hearts fielded a reasonably strong side, including some of the substitutes from Sunday’s first-team victory over Hibs, while United included first-team stars John Souttar and Ryan Gauld in their starting line-up.

United began the match brightly, but Hearts had the first two attempts at goal, Jamie Walker and Angus Beith both shooting wide of the target.

On 13 minutes United’s Scott Fraser hit a free-kick into the side-netting, and three minutes later Aidan Connolly opened the scoring from the penalty spot after being upended in the box.

A mini reshuffle by Hearts at half-time made little difference to a very disappointing display. However, on the hour mark, Gary Oliver, from a David Smith cross, brought a great save out of goalkeeper Joe McGovern. Moments later, Paul McCallum also had a shot saved.

United were now dominating all areas of the pitch and, after passing up a few chances, Adam Marwood tied up the spoils on 76 minutes, netting from close range following a corner kick.

Hearts have one league match left, away to Kilmarnock on Thursday, May 8.

Hearts: Ridgers; Ford (Simpson 46), Gordon, McGhee, L Smith, D Smith (Daniel 82), A Scott, Beith, Walker (Buchanan 66), Oliver, McCallum. Unused sub: Millar.
