GARY LOCKE admits he didn’t fill the Hearts bench against Celtic on Saturday because some of his players were barely out of school!

Locke’s young team put up a valiant fight against the champions at Parkhead before succumbing to second-half goals from Kris Commons and James Forrest.

Only five Hearts substitutes were named as the Tynecastle boss – whose administration-hit outfit have been further hampered by a series of injuries – refused to fill the quota for appearance sake.

He said: “I brought a couple of young lads with the squad but they had just left school in July, so I didn’t think it was right for me (to put them on the bench).

“You have to come into the first-team squad when you are ready.

“We only had enough for four outfield players on the bench but there is nothing we can do about that, that’s where we are at the minute.”
