Morgaro Gomis is a strong contender to replace Danny Wilson as Hearts captain, head coach Robbie Neilson revealed today. Gomis is vice-captain and will don the armband at Cowdenbeath this afternoon as Wilson serves a one-game suspension.
Neilson will take a final decision on his new skipper over the summer. Wilson informed Hearts last week that he will invoke a contract clause to leave Tynecastle for free next month. Gomis is the favourite to take the captaincy at the moment, although Neilson said he will is also consider giving it to one of several new signings Hearts are planning.
“Morgaro is the vice-captain and will take the armband against Cowdenbeath, but there are a couple of guys who can do the role,” he explained. “I will look at that over the summer, and it also depends on who we get in over the summer. If we get someone in who I feel can do a better job, then he will take the armband.”
Gomis’ midfield partner, Miguel Pallardo, is close to agreeing a new contract to keep him at Tynecastle next season and beyond. The 28-year-old Spaniard’s current deal expires in a few weeks but both parties have agreed the guts of an extension.
“We are almost there. Everyone seems happy and it is just a case of getting things signed,” explained Neilson, who spoke with Pallardo’s agent last week. “He is happy, his family is happy and so are we. I expect it to be done soon.
“I was hoping to get it tied up this week, but there were a couple of hold-ups with new FIFA guidelines and a few things that have changed in that respect in the last month or so, but it should be done soon.”
