Hearts have decided against signing former Celtic defender Lewis Toshney, the Evening News can reveal.
The 22-year-old, pictured, spent time on trial at Riccarton last week under the scrutiny of the Hearts management team during training sessions.
However, both head coach Robbie Neilson and director of football Craig Levein opted not to offer Toshney a contract.
Regular right-back Callum Paterson is back in training after knee surgery, whilst 18-year-old Jordan McGhee has performed well in his absence during recent weeks. Hearts also recently signed Adam Eckersley to compete for the left-back position with Kevin McHattie.
Defensive cover is therefore well provided, with Brad McKay challenging Alim Ozturk and Danny Wilson for the centre-back positions.
Toshney played on loan at Dundee last season and has been released by Celtic. He can operate at right-back or centre-back.
Hearts continue to look at free agents who are able to sign for clubs outwith the transfer window. Neilson has recruited 11 new players since his appointment as head coach in May.
