Farid El Alagui continued his comeback from injury as the Hibs Development Squad were 2-0 victors against their Dundee United counterparts in Forfar, thanks to Danny Handling’s double.
The first half yesterday was dominated by Hibs, with El Alagui, Sam Stanton and Jordon Forster coming close to beating Joe McGovern.
Dundee United were forced into their own half as Hibs pressed in the second 45 and Handling’s late brace sealed the win.
The first chance of the game fell to El Alagui in the ninth minute, the forward, who has not played for the first team since August after snapping an Achilles’ tendon, stooped low to meet Aaron Dunsmore’s cross from the right wing, but McGovern dived low to save the effort.
Jamie Montgomery tested Hibs keeper Kleton Perntreou before United’s Robbie Muirhead thumped a shot towards the bottom corner of the net which Perntreou saved in the 24th minute.
Hibs began to turn the screw and dominate the game as El Alagui was denied twice and Stanton and Forster both came close to opening the scoring for the visitors.
The second half began in a similar fashion, with Hibs dictating the play. The first chance came with 58 minutes gone as Dunsmore’s cross was diverted onto the post and Stanton’s shot was blocked on the line.
Jordan Sinclair and Stanton had chances to give Hibs the lead, before Handling converted from close range in the 80th minute to deservedly put the visiting side in front.
Two minutes later and Handling completed the scoring as his emphatic finish high into the net ensured Hibs would leave Angus with a victory.
Muirhead sent a free-kick goalward in injury-time, but Perntreou tipped it onto the bar to deny Dundee United a consolation goal.
