Hibs lost further ground in the chase for promotion from the Championship after they drew 0-0 at home to Dumbarton.

It was a frustrating afternoon for Alan Stubbs’ side, who missed a penalty on 40 minutes when Dominique Malonga’s driven effort was saved by Danny Rogers. Hibs players appealed that the ball crossed the line as it squirmed underneath the Dumbarton keeper’s body, but referee Barry Cook did not award a goal.

Ian Murray, the Dumbarton manager, admitted after the match that he felt the ball had crossed the line and his players had confirmed it, but that will be of scant consolation to the home outfit.

Hibs stay in fifth place in the Championship table, three points off the play-off spots and 14 points behind leaders Hearts.

The hosts created plenty of chances througout the match and forces a barrow-load of corner kicks, but Rogers was in fine form, making a series of saves from Jason Cummings in particular.

Dumbarton threatened sporadically, but did almost score through former Hibs striker Colin Nish in the first half after he flashed a header just wide from a Scott Linton long throw-in.

Stubbs made two changes to the team that drew 1-1 on league duty last Saturday against Raith Rovers, with the fit-again David Gray reinstated at right wing-back, while Dylan McGeouch replaced Scott Allan in midfield.

The head coach adopted the 3-5-2 formation that succeeded both away at Rangers and at Ross County, but Hibs struggled to make the system work at home as they toiled to break down their stuffy visitors.

They thought they had broken the deadlock on 76 minutes when Paul Heffernan fired past Rogers from close range, but the goal was chalked off - rightly - for an offside flag raised for Liam Craig’s involvement in the move.

Paul Hanlon came closest in the final minutes with a point-blank header saved by Rogers, but it wasn’t to be as he final whistle sounded to a chorus of boos from the Hibs support.
