Bo’ness ground out a 3-1 victory in a tricky match at Fauldhouse – with a little help from a wonder strike by 19-year-old Connor McGregor.

With what surely must be a contender for goal of the season, McGregor hit a first-time volley from 40 yards into the top corner with the ball still rising as it smashed into the net. The strike brought applause from both sets of supporters.

“You know right away when you hit the ball that it felt right,” said McGregor. “It’s the best goal I’ve scored and I’m going to enjoy it because I might not get another one like it.”

This goal lit up the whole of the first half with neither side dominating, as Fauldhouse were more than a match for Allan McGonigal’s men.

The second half started the same as the first with no one in control. The next goal would prove crucial and it came with another super finish from Bo’ness. In the 66th minute Ian Nimmo picked the ball up in his own half. He swept a sublime pass out wide to sub Darren Gribben, who turn sent in a another perfect cross to Chris Mackie who showed all his experience to turn his marker and pass the ball into the net.

This goal knocked the stuffing from Fauldhouse and for a period Bo’ness were in control. They grabbed a third with another super finish from Ross Philp. He picked up a loose ball just outside the box and drilled it low and hard into the bottom corner. Fauldhouse still tried hard with the hard-working striker Brian Ross prominent. They pulled a goal back when Ross was rewarded for all his hard work with a fine finish, but it was too late with two minutes to go for any real chance of a fightback.

The man of the match was young McGregor, who looks certain to follow Scott Pittman and Jordyn Sheerin in last season’s players who stepped up to league football. “That’s what my goal is having signed from Lothian Thistle at the start of the season,” he added. “I’m really enjoying playing here as they allow me to express myself and hopefully get a step up.”
