Penicuik boss Craig Meikle admitted his side’s 4-2 Scottish Junior Cup win over Maybole ‘wasn’t pretty’ but insisted making the third round was all that mattered.
The home side had to bounce back from yet another poor start to the game before easing past an Ayrshire outfit who made things uncomfortable for their opponents.
“It wasn’t pretty, but we did enough to win the game and at this stage of the cup that’s all we wanted,” said Meikle. “We should have had the game dead and buried in the first half.”
Penicuik were a goal down after five minutes. A quick break down the left saw Mark Dyer cut the ball back for Chris Allan, who had his first effort blocked by keeper Bejaoui but rammed home the rebound.
The home side missed several glaring chances before drawing level just before half-time, James McPartlin looking suspiciously offside as he drove the ball into the net from ten yards.
On the hour mark, Penicuik took the lead with a simple goal. Sub Danny Rennie was sent through on the right and his low cross was driven into the net by Grant Killin. The home side grabbed a third in the 77th minute when Ryan McCallum’s low cross from the right was side-footed home by Jordan Lister.
Maybole were not finished though and pulled a goal back with five minutes to go, Robert Paterson heading home.
Penicuik huffed and puffed before killing the game dead with a fourth goal in the dying minutes as a Ryan Gay corner was headed into the net by Scott McCulloch.
