City won 4-1 and took the lead in the fifth minute when McFarland sent the ball across to the unmarked Aaron James and he volleyed it past Dodds.
McColm then passed up a good chance to level the scores, shooting wide from a good position, before Dodds did well to keep out a Ross Guthrie shot and block Gair’s follow-up.
The visiting keeper once more came to Gala’s rescue when he saved Devlin’s low shot, while at the other end Hossack was denied after his fierce shot was blocked. City should have increased their lead when Guthrie was presented with a great chance but his shot was deflected and Gair’s follow-up was also smothered.
The home side’s persistence was rewarded in 42 minutes when Mark McConnell was played through to fire the ball past the keeper, and two minutes later a Dodds throw out hit the back of a defender and Guthrie gratefully snapped up the loose ball to fire it into the net – 3-0.
The visitors were not daunted by these setbacks and came out for the second half ready to match anything City could throw at them. In 47 minutes Gala pulled a goal back when Paliczka returned a slack City pass into the box and Jamie Gibson headed the ball over Stobie’s arms and into the net. McFarland then sent a dangerous cross into the box which no City player could connect, and Harrison went agonisingly close when he volleyed just past the post. In the last minute of the match Devlin’s run was halted illegally in the box and, despite Dodds getting a hand to the ball, Mark Osborne’s penalty stretched the City total to four. Osborne had the ball in the net once more in stoppage time, but was ruled offside.
