Edinburgh City have made their first new signing since winning promotion to the SPFL with the capture of former St Johnstone player Neil Martyniuk.

The 19-year-old began his career with Hibs after signing professional terms in 2012. He spent three years with the Easter Road club’s academy, which included a short loan spell with Berwick Rangers towards the end of the 2014/15 season.

Martyniuk penned a one-year deal with St Johnstone after his Hibs contract expired last summer. During his time with the Perth side, the defender was the unfortunate victim in a spitting incident that saw Inverness Caledonian Thistle striker Dani Lopez sent off in an U20’s game between the two teams, before the Spaniard was suspended by and eventually quit the Highland club.

The Musselburgh-born teenager went on to have another loan spell with Montrose for the second half of the 2015/16 season. He made ten appearances for the Gable Endies, helping them to an eighth-placed finish in Ladbrokes League Two.

Martynuik will offer some welcome recent experience of football at this level to City manager Gary Jardine, who has until now focused on retaining the majority of the squad that won promotion.
