Craig Nisbet’s first match as manager of Preston Athletic ended in defeat as the Panners went down 1-0 at Peffermill to Edinburgh University.
After dominating possession, the Uni deservedly took the lead on 28 minutes. Good closing down on the left wing resulted in a neat pass through to Jack Guthrie, whose first-time effort was parried by Chris Flockhart into the path of Joe Aitken to slot home.
The goal seemed to wake Preston up and the away side created a number of good chances, Andrew Gilchrist forcing a good save from Mark Tait and Jack McCue lobbing the goalkeeper, only for his effort come back off the bar.
Minutes into the second half Jamie Todd was shown a straight red for something he said to the referee. Guthrie hit the post for the students, but the ten men were still in the game and Gary Nicholson nearly equalised at the end.
