Jack Guthrie hit a hat-trick as Edinburgh University edged out Selkirk in an incredible nine-goal encounter at Yarrow Park.
The students fell behind on 27 minutes when a long ball to former Hibs striker Garry O’Connor gave him a clear run on goal and he scored with a fierce drive. Edinburgh’s equaliser came in 32 minutes when a cross from Sutherland deceived keeper Jamie Newman and Guthrie bundled the ball home.
Edinburgh scored again on 35 minutes when a corner from Patterson was laid back by Ward to George Nikolaidis who scored from 20 yards.
Selkirk responded well and drew level after a Duncan Black own goal on 38 minutes.
The first half scoring was completed on 43 minutes when a through ball from Dan Ward released Guthrie for him to drive the ball low past the keeper.
O’Connor converted a free-kick on 50 minutes to make it 3-3 but Nikolaidis restored Edinburgh’s lead six minutes later, stroking home low from 18 yards.
Nikolaidis turned provider in 61 minutes when his cross was well controlled by Guthrie who then drove the ball in or his third of the game.
O’Connor cut the deficit on 74 minutes, completing his hat-trick from another free-kick strike.
Scott Taylor McKenzie was given a straight red card on 78 minutes as the visitors held on for the three points.
