SPECTATORS who made a donation to a local charity supported by Spartans were given free entry to Saturday’s League Cup game at home to Stirling University.

And those fans saw both defences get into the spirit by gifting goals to their opponents as the students triumphed 4-3.

Following a stuffy first 20 minutes it was the visitors who opened the scoring. Spartans defender Gary Cennerazzo hit the bar with a cross, however a free-kick was given and Uni keeper Ryan Marshall launched the ball forward to John Sludden who lobbed Ross Gilpin in the Spartans goal.

Spartans responded and forced a corner moments later. Kevin Motion’s delivery hit Uni midfielder Khan Williams-Mitchell before bouncing high into his own net to bring things level.

Williams-Mitchell made up for his error, first winning what looked like a poorly awarded penalty in the 52nd minute as he fell over in the box, however much to the frustration of the Spartans defenders the referee pointed to the spot and Sludden stepped up to score his second.

Six minutes later and Williams-Mitchell got on the scoresheet himself. Kyle Faulds’ shot from ten yards was saved by Gilpin however the wet ball squirmed under his body and fell to Williams-Mitchell who was presented with an open goal from just six yards out.

In the 71st minute Keith McLeod pulled one back with a sensational strike from 20 yards out which curled into the top corner of the net. The on form striker has now scored for ten games in a row, this being his 18th of the season.

Spartans defender Kevin Sivewright made a last ditch tackle to cleared a Chris Geddes effort off the line however Ryan Millar got on the end of a Sludden cross in the 80th minute to restore the students’ two goal advantage.

Spartans then ensured there would be an interesting few minutes of injury time when Danny O’Donnell poked the ball home at the back post from a yard out but the visitors held on for the win.
