Spartans’ Cup dreams were left shattered yesterday afternoon as Glasgow City ran out emphatic winners at Broadwood Stadium in the Scottish Women’s Cup final.
City, buoyed by qualification to the quarter-finals of the Women’s Champions’ League in midweek, produced a clinical performance to win 5-0 and in doing so, wrapped up their third successive domestic treble.
Despite the defeat, Spartans’ manager Debbi McCulloch insisted she was proud of her players and their efforts.
She said: “Even though it wasn’t the result we wanted, I thought the girls played with a desire and determination. They gave me everything they had and I’m very proud of them all.”
City opened the scoring with a Fiona Brown strike on the angle after 26 minutes and, as Spartans chased the game after the break, City exploited the gaps.
On 67 minutes, youngster Brown netted her second goal.
The three-goal cushion allowed City to apply a little finesse and a late double from Scotland star Jo Love – the second an audacious lob – completed the rout.
