Edinburgh University claimed a 4-1 home victory over Gala Fairydean Rovers heading into the Christmas break.

The students struck an early blow on 13 minutes when Jack Guthrie finished from close range after good play by Fraser Thomson and Finn Daniels-Yeoman down the right. The hosts added to their lead on 28 minutes when Paul Sutherland’s 30-yard free-kick deceived goalkeeper Steven King.

Guthrie added a third on 38 minutes with a clinical strike from 15 yards after excellent approach play by Scott McCrory-Irving.

Guthrie completed his hat-trick on 83 minutes with a tap-in from close range. The visitors earned a deserved goal on 90 minutes when Stuart Noble rounded Mark Tait before easing the ball home.
