Tayport produced one of the shock results of the Junior Cup third round as they hammered East Super League leaders Newtongrange 5-1.
Dave Baikie’s men are currently bottom of the top flight but they turned in a rampant display against Alan Miller’s high-flyers.
The visitors had to come from behind after Jordan Cropley gave Star the lead on 21 minutes with a cute lobbed effort.
Tayport’s response was instant when Stephen McPhee crashed in a shot from 30 yards four minutes later.
Chris King spurned a great opportunity for Star on 35 minutes when he shot wide after latching onto Shaun Jamieson’s flick. And McPhee made them pay moments later when he fired in Tayport’s second after Kieron Renton had saved his initial shot.
Star lost Paul Tansey to injury at the start of the second half and their misery deepened when Matt Adam tapped in the third goal on 62 minutes after Renton had blocked Grant Lawson’s stinging drive.
The tie was finished as a contest on 80 minutes when Lawson was left with a simple finish at the back post after Ryan Suttie played the ball across the face of goal. McPhee netted his hat-trick on 88 minutes when he took advantage of a Star defensive mix-up. Gary Cherrie hit the bar for the hosts in stoppage time with a free-kick, but it was a disappointing afternoon for Star who currently lead the Super League by six points.
Baikie was full of praise for his side’s performance, saying: “We got a fantastic result against Bo’ness last week and on Saturday we stuck to our shape and thoroughly deserved the win. This result will surprise a few people, but it’s one game at a time.”
