Newtongrange boss Alan Miller urged his team to “step up a gear” after they dropped points in their quest for the Super League title at Armadale.
Star were denied by a sublime Darren Dalrymple effort ten minutes from time and Miller admitted: “We switched off and the players looked like they were comfortable with a single goal. We needed to step up a gear in games.”
It was Armadale who had a great chance to take the lead early on when a poor pass-back from Star’s David Dunn had goalkeeper Keiron Renton in trouble.
The Dale’s Robbie Feeney robbed Renton and curled a great shot netwards. However, Dunn redeemed himself with a clearance off the line.
Just after the half hour mark, Newtongrange were awarded a penalty for a trip on Kris Renton. Gary Cherrie stepped up but his effort was poor and Stuart Walker saved easily.
The visitors did eventually take the lead just before the half-time whistle with a super goal from Chris King.
Great one-touch football between Jamieson, Renton and King let King in, and he produced one of his specials with a delicate lob over the keeper into the top corner.
Newtongrange stepped up a gear at the start of the second half and in a good 30 minutes had numerous chances to kill the game dead. They had three efforts cleared off the line in one attack alone.
However, a one-goal lead is always tricky and so it proved when Armadale grabbed the equaliser with Dalrymple’s goal. He played a one-two with Feeney and from 20 yards drove the ball into the top corner.
