Penicuik Athletic’s Premier League title bid was put on hold after their match at home to Jeanfield Swifts was abandoned at half-time due to a waterlogged pitch.

Despite the best efforts from club officials and players to keep the game on during the interval after a first-half downpour, referee Duncan Smith called it off with the score at 0-0.

Penicuik will now face Jeanfield this Wednesday at Penicuik Park (kick-off 7pm) knowing a win will secure their first league crown in nine years.

Player-manager Craig Meikle was glad the game was called off in the end after admitting his side were finding the conditions tough in the first half.

He said: “It was definitely the right decision to call it off. It’s just typical of our weather that games are getting called off at this time of year. It’s ridiculous.

“I thought it was a bit of a leveller, so I was quite glad that it got abandoned.
