PRESTON ATHLETIC were edged out 1-0 by Vale of Leithen in the Ferrari Packaging Lowland League after losing the only goal with almost the last kick of the game.

A slip by Chris Moffat saw the ball fall to Vale trialist Calum Jackson whose volley took a slight deflection to deceive Chris Flockhart in goal.

• WHITEHILL WELFARE were knocked out in the first round of the Football Nation Qualifing Cup after a 3-2 defeat at Civil Service Strollers.

In the first minute, Steven Manson was tripped in the Strollers box but Dean Knight saw his penalty pushed away by Stuart Burnside in goal.

With half-time approaching, Strollers’ Kyle Boggie beat Ross Nesbit to a long ball and he calmly finished. After the break, Jordan Finnie finished superbly to make it 2-0. Strollers defended resolutely until the 69th minute when Craig Anderson pulled a goal back with a lovely curling effort into the bottom corner.

With the visitors chasing an equaliser, Davy Stewart restored Strollers’ two-goal advantage and, despite Tony Muir making it 3-2 late on, Civil held on for the win.
