A brilliant goal by Kris Renton sent Newtongrange top of the McBookie.com Super League.
Star manager Alan Miller was relieved to see his side overcome a strong Musselburgh team and said: “We knew Musselburgh would be a tough hurdle to overcome because they have a lot of talented players. It took a super goal to separate the teams and that’s the second time in two weeks that Kris has scored a decisive goal against one of his old clubs.”
The first half was littered with missed chances, with Musselburgh shading it with the bulk of the pressure. Star had to rely on goalkeeper Keiron Renton to keep the visitors out with a couple of superb saves. The keeper also took a heavy knock but bravely continued in goal.
Newtongrange had a string of fruitless corners after the break. And it was midfield general and ex Hearts player Craig Thomson who was the busy man spraying some terrific passes from the centre of the pitch. Then, when the strikers failed to deliver, he took responsibility with a 30-yard drive which drifted narrowly past.
With 15 minutes to go, defender Blair Tolmie picked up the ball ten yards inside his own half before sending it high into the inside-right channel for Kris Renton to chase. As the ball fell over his right shoulder, he clipped on the volley over the keeper and into the net.
Musselburgh manager Steve McLeish said: “We took the first half while Newtongrange took the second and a special goal decided it.”
