EDINBURGH CITY gained another three Lowland League points with a fine 3-1 victory over East Kilbride at a rain-lashed K-Park on Saturday.
Both sides started cautiously on the soaking 3G pitch, with forays by Wilson, Murdoch, Daw and Traynor foiled by an effective City defence. The visitors were less prominent in attack, but took the lead in 23 minutes. McFarland released Peter Stenhouse on the left and the powerful striker shrugged off his marker to force his way into the six-yard box and shoot under the keeper.
Play flowed from end to end with some efficient defending, although McLaughlin and Fitzharris both had good chances to level the scoring. In the 52nd minute, East Kilbride finally equalised with Kevin Wilson’s diving header turning in a McLaughlin cross.
City were revitalised by this setback. Stenhouse had a header tipped out for a corner, then a goalbound McConnell drive was deflected at the last instant. The visitors regained the lead in 71 minutes. Gair’s corner, headed goalward by Paterson at the back post, was blocked on the line by Daw, but East Kilbride couldn’t clear the ball and Mark McConnell shot home.
Edinburgh City sealed the victory four minutes later, playing out of defence with some wonderful one-touch football. McFarland found McConnell who headed on to Dougie Gair, and the captain raced clear to hit a spectacular long-range shot over the head of the advancing Meldrum.
