Lowland League champions Spartans have agreed in principle to sign Whitehill Welfare captain Mike Bruce when his contract with the Rosewell club expires on June 30.
The news that the defender has agreed to join the Ainslie Park club is a bitter blow for Whitehill manager Mickey Lawson, who has made no secret of his ambition to challenge for league honours next season and an opportunity of promotion into the SPFL.
Lawson said: “We’re disappointed to lose him as you don’t like to see any of your players move on. Mike has a lot of time for Whitehill, his dad comes and watches the games, but he just thinks that Spartans will give him an opportunity of playing at a higher level.
“At the start of last season there were a couple of SPFL clubs sniffing about him but nothing came of it.
“He just wants to prove himself and with the infrastructure Spartans have, he thinks he has a better chance of progressing with Spartans than with Whitehill. We’ve just got to accept that and wish him all the best.”
Bruce has been excellent for Whitehill this season and will provide some stiff competition for Spartans central defensive pairing of captain Kevin Sivewright and Danny O’Donnell.
