Spartans underlined their Lowland League title credentials this term with a fantastic 3-0 victory over SPFL League 2 outfit Berwick Rangers in the first round of the Irn Bru Challenge Cup at Shielfield Park

It’s the second time in just four days the Ainslie Park side have netted three times without conceding, having opened up their league campaign with a win at Stirling University last Friday night.

Scott Maxwell put Dougie Samuel’s men in front within ten minutes, drilling a shot
into the bottom corner before Jamie Dishington notched a second right on the stroke of half-time.

Spartans effectively sealed their passage into the second round just minutes after the restart, captain David Greenhill feeding Craig Stevenson, who finished with aplomb after finding space inside the Berwick penalty box.

The visitors continued to press their lacklustre hosts and could have added to their tally as the second half wore on. Nonetheless, it proved a hugely satisfying night’s work for Samuel’s players down in the Borders ahead of this weekend’s visit of Edinburgh University.

Meanwhile, in the East of Scotland League Cup Qualifying Group B, Leith Athletic saw off Heriot-Watt University 2-0 at Meadowbank.
