Newtongrange STAR set up a repeat of last season’s Dechmont Forklift League Cup by beating Sauchie 1-0 at New Victoria Park last night to book a date with Linlithgow Rose.
Star had all the pressure but had to wait until the 80th minute for the breakthrough when full back Michael Deland played a one-two with Paul Tansey before smashing home the only goal.
Manager Alan Miller was delighted with the result, saying: “What a night that was. A cracking game of football played at a terrific tempo.
“We know Sauchie are a good side but that’s the fifth time we’ve played them in 15 months and while they haven’t beaten us yet each game has been tight.
“We changed the set up to a 4-3-3 to counter Sauchie playing three at the back and it worked. Michael’s goal was his first one for the club and being a 21-year-old is proving a great signing.”
The final is set to be played at Broxburn’s Albyn Park but Miller is clearly not a fan of the artificial turf.
He said: “Now it’s Linlithgow in the final and I hope not on a plastic pitch. I think it’s nonsense to play a cup final on a plastic pitch as was proved last season. It’s a lottery.”
