A DOMINANT first half display from Whitehill Welfare proved to be enough to see off Threave Rovers 4-1 on Saturday.
Welfare were awarded a penalty after ten minutes when Wayne McIntosh appeared to fall over the ball under close attention. However, referee Colin Pensom saw a foul and pointed to the spot. Aaron Somerville sent Vinnie Parker the wrong way to give his side the lead.
Shortly after it was 2-0 as a great ball from Darren McGlashan found McIntosh who ran at the Threave defence and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner off both bar and post. McIntosh was a constant threat and he narrowly missed the target when found in the middle after great link up play between Kerr Dodds and Steven Manson.
On 25 minutes Threave came close to reducing the deficit with McGurk called into action, his parry landing at the feet of David Frew, who shot high over the bar. Minutes later McIntosh was forced wide after rounding the keeper but saw his cross cleared.
A third goal was coming and after a Somerville effort seemed to cross the line and come back out again, Steven Manson was scythed down in the box. Parker guessed the right way, but Somerville’s effort was too powerful and he notched his second from the spot.
On 33 minutes Somerville was released behind the Rovers defence and he chipped the onrushing keeper for what looked like his hat-trick until McIntosh made sure with the ball a yard out. It was almost five just before the break, but Dodds saw an effort blocked before a combination of McGurk and Chris Dolan somehow prevented Grant Parker from pulling a goal back.
The visitors eventually did pull a goal back on 72 minutes when substitute Shaun Milligan blasted past McGurk from close range. However, Welfare held on comfortably.
